IEURL V2.52  Stuart Halliday 2004

==================================

I regularly bring home on my RISC OS machine Internet Explorer 'Favorites'

files. These are files ending with the postfix .url and usually live in the

Favorites folder of IE4,5 or 6 on a PC machine running Windows 95-XP.

But until I wrote this little app I had to manually edit these Favorites files

to extract the URL address contained within if I want to use them with Fresco, Netsurf or Oregano2.

Now I don't have to. :-)

All I've got to do is filetype them &1BA (or IEURL if you prefer) and make sure

the !IEurl app is run by the Filer at bootup.

!IEURL takes up *no* memory until you double click on a IEURL file and then

!IEurl launches the URL in it and then quits itself (it takes up to 12K of RAM

when it is briefly loaded so it doesn't 'break the bank').

If Netsurf has been seen by the Filer, but not loaded, then when you

double click on a IEURL file Netsurf is first loaded then opens the URL.

REQUIREMENTS

============

RISCOS 3.1 - 5

The ANT Suite (Fresco) or NetSurf or Oregano2

Internet access would be nice too. :-)

HOW TO USE

==========

Make sure !IEurl is 'Run' by the Filer (ie Booted) at Boot up time

(Make it the last thing in the !Boot - Boot - 'Run' list.)

Double clicking !IEurl will appear to do nothing, but it will claim the

double-clicking of IEURL files for itself.

If you get an 'error' message when double-clicking on a IEURL file which

may say "URL: Can't read contents..." or "URL: No application has been seen"

then you probably need to rerun !IEurl.

I hope someone else also finds this useful.

If you do, give me an quick email.

IMPORTING YOUR INTERNET EXPLORER FAVOURITES.

============================================

If you run !IEURL it sets the DOSMAP and LanMan98 (if you have it) to map DOS .url files to filetype &1BA IEURL (this filetype name and number has been

made offical).

I usually copy the favorites from Windows to my RISC OS machine and mass filetype them to 1BA.

You can test that it works by loading a web browser and double clicking on a IEURL file and see the URL been fetched in your web browser.

At this time I don't have a copy of WebsterXL so I can't say if it works.

Please, someone tell me.

TO FIND THE LOCATION OF YOUR FAVORITES.

=======================================

Right click the Start Icon on the Windows task bar and choose the option 'Open'

at the top.

Click on the Up icon in the Explorer window that has opened and you'll

probably see a path like c:\documents and settings\<your_username_here>

You should see a folder called Favorites in there.

Copy this folder and its contents to your RISC OS machine.

NOTE: Windows XP Home users may only see:

c:\documents and settings\WindowsXP

Check in there for a Favorites folder which should contain files and folders the names of which will corresponde to your Favorite listing in IE.

HISTORY

=======

V2.52 - Corrected error in !Run and !Boot of assignment of Lanman98 filetypes.

V2.51 - got offical filetype for Internet Explorer URL files - &1BA IEURL

V2.5 - rewrote it to handle only IEURL filetyped files so it will work with

Oregano2 and Netsurf.

V2.1 added support for BASEURL= lines in URLs.

V2.1 now supports URL files that contain file:/ 'urls'. These allow you to

place shortcuts to HTML files on your harddrive.

For example:

file:/ADFS::HardDisc4/$/Comms/Ant/Apps/!Fresco/Welcome would open up the home

page of Fresco (well on my machine at least).

Or

file:/<Fresco$Dir>/Welcome

if you prefer the use of system variables.

V2.0 now supports URL files that contain ftp:// 'urls'.
